Lysdexia

Lysdexia is a unique machine that captures the experience of living with dyslexia, specifically with written language. The machine features a gear-field base with a handle on the front, and when turned, two panels with encrypted type move in opposite directions, revealing one word at a time to form a complete sentence. The user must read, remember, and interpret the words continuously to understand the message, simulating the experience of dyslexia.

ENCRYPTED MESSAGE

The sentence encrypted within the machine is written in the style of Dr. Seuss's "The Cat in the Hat" and uses the Dolch word list, a set of words that must be recognized by sight rather than sounding them out. This makes it especially challenging for those with dyslexia.

THE MACHINE

The machine represents the capabilities of those with dyslexia, despite the challenges they may face. It was designed and built entirely by someone with dyslexia using oak wood, glass, and vinyl, highlighting the potential for creativity and achievement in spite of the disability.
